Boot Camp for new fighters

I've been talking with some of the Knights on the Bel Boards asking their opinions on some structured plans to become better fighters, eventually leading up to being recognized as a Knight.

In our conversation, Sir Kyrian gave me a link - http://sites.google.com/site/belegarthtraining/table-of-contents - for a 6 session program designed to take someone who's never been outside and turn them into an informed, basically trained fighter with knowledge of the BoW, balance, footwork, weapon handling, etc.

I have been following that thread and think Kyrian had some pretty awesome suggestions. I haven't had a chance to stop and think about them as a whole, but I think running the boot camp again with Kyrian's outline is a great idea.

The Legion is moving its unit practice to a different time so we'll be able to show up at 6 pm on Wednesdays like we have been, but use that time to attempt to resurrect the boot camp from last summer.

Hopefully we'll have some takers.

Afternoon! I saw you gentlemen at the park a few months back practicing and have been looking for you ever since. I actually teach a Korean sword art called Haidong Gumdo here in St. George. I thought that maybe your group might be interested in a FREE private introductory class? We train with single sided wooden swords and move up to a myriad of real swords. This art focuses on multiple attackers with a weapon. Check out my masters pg for a brief insight: http://lbsma.com/HG.aspx. There is a video put out from the last US Open http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxHDeAZV5Ec&feature=related that shows some of what we do. What do you think?

Welcome Cathleen! It'd be great to get together sometime and see what you are doing in this area. Several of us have done martial arts in the past or are studying them now and it would be interesting to cross train with you. We are in the park every Wednesday night at 7pm if you'd like to find us or where would we find you? BTW, I don't know that you linked the video you intended to, although that one is interesting and I hadn't seen it yet.

Bring your Wednesday night class on a field trip and try their techniques with foam weapons and full contact opponants. =)

Sorry Isk, had to butt in.

Very nice website Cathleen. You have had an interesting journey and I'd love to sit down and talk with you sometime about some of the stuff you've done. I think most of the folks in the core group who hang on through the winter would get a kick out of doing the intro class with you. We'd also love to have you come out and go a few rounds with us some night. With your background, you'll pick it up really quickly although what we do is definitely a sport rather than a martial art and the sport rules add some quirks to one's approach.

And Konradr, maybe they'll come out while you are up visiting from Vegas. :)

Thanks for the invite Konradr. I'll let my students know that your there.

I feel I've had quit the journey myself and would enjoy meeting with you anytime. You must have some stories as well based off of your involvement with weapons :) Would Friday the 21st at 1900 work for you all? Then of course we will be having class at 8 PM right after if anyone would like to watch or participate. What do you guys think?

We'll talk it over, but I think that Friday would work for me. I still need to do some checking, though.

Cathleen, welcome!

This sounds like good edutainment. Unfortunately I will be working and unable to attend. I hope some of our guys can take you up on our offer. We'll be looking forward to entertaining you and some of yours as well when you can.

I may be able to work the time in on Friday. We'll see what my school stuff looks like this week.

Well if you gentlemen (and ladies I presume) would like to get back to me about that Friday evening with a tally of people who'd like to do an intro I'll reserve that time for your group. And of course all of you whom are not able to attend can feel free to attend our regular class at no cost to see what you think. Its nice to have weapons enthusiasts near by in a time where weapons are known as a "thing of the past". Kudos to you! Hope to meet some of you Friday.

Cathleen, only a few of us are regularly on the board here so we'll have to bring it up on Wednesday at practice before we'll know who really plans to make it. I think it will work out for me, but I'd hate to have you schedule time if I am the only one who will show.

What's the dress code, BTW? And an exact address would be good as IMA unfortunately doesn't mean anything to me. When we get together, I'll bring along some of our fighting gear as well so you guys can handle it a bit and get a feel for the stuff we use. Thanks again for inviting us over for a 'free sample'.

Actually all the information is located on my website as I mentioned before. But in short the classes are held at International Martial Arts at 395 North 1300 West #37, St. George just off Sunset behind the Blind Man Store. I'd like to see your weapons you have constructed for sure, thank you for offering.

Please wear loose fitting exercise clothing that you can move in easily. If you have a Japanese hukuma or Korean chima baji you can wear them also. If you have a jang do or long sword (wooden or real) you may bring that as well if you like. I've practiced with a katana before but its not the same as the long sword BUT you may also bring a katana if you wish to show and tell :)

I'm excited to see you guys Friday. Call me if you have questions 773-1030.

Sweet. I don't know how I managed to miss the address on the front page of the site, but thanks for putting it up. I will bring some of my Western Martial Arts gear as well that I haven't used much since starting the Belegarth group down here. Anyone who wants to go, I have Western wooden arming swords and longswords (IME, a European arming sword is closer to an Asian long sword) and a boken or two I can bring so you have something to practice with. This should be fun.

Everybody who is going, this is at 1900, 7pm, tonight. I think I may have said 6pm on Wednesday, but Cathleen invited us for 7. Should be really interesting.

Not to detract from your message. I just downloaded and watched a National Geographic special called "The Medieval Fight book" or something like that. Its about Talhoffer's book, but not just the fighting, also his weapons of war. They demonstrate some of the fighting, which was mostly judicial combat of arms, and make some of his weapons of war to test them. Really interesting.

Talhoffer is one the most well-known and complete of the existing European fight manuals. I think Tibby has mine right now. I'd be interested to see the video, Konradr. Link?

I do have your hardback and paper book companion book, as well as one of your wooden wasters still. I'm still reading through them (done it twice now) but without some regular practice with someone who is proficient I feel my learning has reached a plateau. I'm at work now, so I can't get them to you tonight, but if you need them just let me know and I'll return them.

Thanks, Konradr. I'll be really interested to see who they chose to interview as the experts.

No sweat, Tibby. You can get them back if you're done with them. As long as Petey isn't playing with them I'm not too worried.

And thank you Cathleen. The opportunity to sample Haidong Gumdo was very enjoyable and we all appreciated your sharing this with us.

Thank you for coming. It was a pleasure meeting all of you and seeing your weaponry. Hopefully I'll get a chance to swing by sometime and watch you guys do your thing at the park. Sounds interesting. Keep us in mind if you decide you would like to do some more training on the side, I really enjoyed all of your enthusiasm.
